PSA sponsors ongoing scientific Working Groups that facilitate research on particular topics of special concern in the Asia and Pacific regions.

These Working Groups are multidisciplinary in focus and inclusive in terms of geographic and participatory scope.

In 2010, PSA announced a major revision to the Guidelines on PSA Working Groups in order to streamline their efficiency and produce more tangible research initiatives.

In 2013, the Pacific Science Council authorized a new ad hoc Committee on Scientific Activities (CSA) that will help define and develop a unique niche for PSA’s scientific activities; conduct business between Congresses and Inter-Congresses; provide updates and status reports to the Executive Board; and liaise with Congress and Inter-Congress Local Organizing Committees. The CSA is currently composed of:

Dr. Phil Cowan (Landcare Research, New Zealand)
Dr. Sang-Bok Han (National Academy of Sciences, Korea)
Dr. Kevin Johnson (University of Hawaii – Manoa)
Dr. Yonglong Lu (Chinese Academy of Sciences)
Dr. David Schindel (Smithsonian Institution)
Dr. Chang-Hung Chou (Academia Sinica, China-Taipei; ex officio)

We are currently exploring new research initiatives and Working Groups dealing with invasive species and barcoding, science communication, marine fisheries, coastal zone management, climate adaptation, the uses of museum collections, and other emerging issues related to sustainable development in the Pacific.
